Since 1997, our community-based writing group has earned grants and recognition from Wayne State University and its surrounding communities as well as from state-sponsored and nationwide foundations. Several Faculty awards in 2006 have focused on classroom research and community research:  

  • Ellen Barton, NCTE Award for Best Article on Teaching Methods in Technical/Scientific Communication, 2005.
  • Gwen Gorzelsky, Michigan Institute on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Award, 2006, sponsored by the Michigan Campus Compact and the Michigan Community Service Commission.
  • Frances Ranney, Wayne State University Community-Based Research and Mentoring Grant, 2006, for collaborative research with Back Alley Bikes, a nonprofit organization near campus.
  • Ruth Ray, Michigan Institute on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Award, 2008, sponsored by the Michigan Campus Compact and the Michigan Community Service Commission
